Véronique Sanson: Besoin de personne

Besoin de personne (I Needed Nobody), 1972 (Album: Amoureuse)
Picture
The title of this song, “Besoin de personne,” says a lot in very few words. It is a truncated version of the more grammatically complete first line of the song: “Je n’ai eu besoin de personne”  ("I did not need anyone"). It drops the subject, verb and negative “ne” but still gets the idea across and in a stronger, more direct way than the full sentence. Note how even the full first line itself omits “pas” because the word “personne” (a negative pronoun) following “n’avoir besoin de” completes the negative idea. Somewhat like the author of the song, who feels she needs nobody for anything, that amputated phrase "besoin de personne" itself then becomes an in-your-face, self-sufficient line that recurs like a Refrain in fully 7 of the 19 remaining verse lines.

This song rings like an anthem to absolute self-sufficiency and independence not only in love but more broadly in making life choices. In retrospect, however, it is tempting to see it as a depiction of Sanson’s impetuous and complete infatuation with Stephen Stills when she met him in 1972 and a manner of justification for her abrupt and unscripted rupture with Michel Berger and departure from France in 1973 to join Stills in the US. But who knows?

Sanson composed the music and the lyrics for the song and Michel Berger produced the album. The Verses are 4 lines each with an ABAB rhyme scheme. The identical Refrains are ABBABBB. She wrote the song in 1972.  Sanson’s pauses, emphases and supplementary vocalizations are significant in articulating the words and enhancing meaning.

Verse
Je n’ai eu besoin de personne
Pour le rencontrer un jour
Ni qu’on me raisonne
Pour m’aider à voir… l’amour

Besoin de personne
Quand je me suis fait… ma loi
Besoin de personne
Quand il est venu… vers moi

Refrain
Je l’ai conquis toute seule
Il m’a offert toute sa vie
Je crois que j’ai dit oui, oui
Je l’ai conquis toute seule
Il m’a offert toute ses nuits
Je crois que j’ai tout pris
Que j’ai tout pris

Verse
Besoin de personne
Pour choisir le chemin de… ma vie
Besoin de personne
Pour pleurer quand il… me renie

Besoin de personne
Quand je me suis fait… ma loi
Besoin de personne
Quand il est venu… vers moi

Refrain
Je l’ai conquis toute seule
Il m’a offert toute sa vie
Je crois que j’ai dit oui, oui
Je l’ai conquis toute seule
Il m’a offert toute ses nuits
Je crois que j’ai tout pris
Que j’ai tout pris

Verse
Besoin de personne
Pour le rencontrer… un jour
Ni qu’on me raisonne
Pour m’aider à voir… l’amour

Verse
I needed nobody
To meet him one day
Nor anyone to discuss with me
To help me see love

I needed nobody
Once I made up my mind
I needed nobody
When he came my way

Refrain
I won him all by myself
He offered me his entire life
I think I said yes, yes...
I won him all by myself
He offered me all his nights
I think I took everything
That I took everything

Verse
I needed nobody
To help me choose my life path
I needed no one
To cry when he turns me away

I needed nobody
Once I made up my mind
I needed no one
When he came my way

Refrain
I won him all by myself
He offered me his entire life
I think I said yes, yes...
I won him all by myself
He offered me all his nights
I think I took everything
That I took everything

Verse
I needed nobody
To meet him one day
Nor anyone to discuss with me
To help me see love
NB:
  1. Ni qu’: “ni” means “nor” or “neither” and is a “negative conjunction” generally used when another negative statement has already been made. In this song, that prior negative statement to which “ni” refers is the first line: “Je n’ai eu besoin de personne.”
