Giuseppe Moustaki (1934-2013) was born in Egypt to Jewish parents from the Greek island of Corfu. He flourished in a multilingual household in Alexandria with parents who owned a highly regarded bookstore, the Cité du Livre. He developed an early taste for French literature and song. When he moved to Paris in 1951 after completing his baccalaureat, singer-songwriter Georges Brassens introduced him to the left-bank French artistic-intellectual community and its cabarets. Moustaki eventually adopted the name Georges in honor of his mentor. Though she was 20 years his senior, he began a close relationship with Edith Piaf in 1958 and wrote lyrics for her song Milord and many other songs. A prolific songwriter, he wrote about 300 songs for popular singers like Serge Reggiani, Barbara, Dalida and many others.
After 1969, with the outstanding success of “Le Métèque” (“The Outcast” or “Immigrant”), he launched a successful career as a solo performer, eventually releasing more than 30 albums and tirelessly performing concerts around the world. These foreign concerts often nourished his music with exposure to new influences. For example, following his visit to Brazil in 1972 for the Rio international festival of popular music, bossa nova and tango rhythms infected his music. After 2009, health problems forced him to stop performing. The songs featured below show insight and empathy about common human experiences like life as an outsider, differences between solitude and loneliness, the transience of opportunity, and the finitude of time.
