Dominique A: Au revoir mon amour

Au revoir mon amour, 2015
Album: Éléor

This is a somber and melancholic monologue about the aftermath of a broken relationship. It is directed to a lost love who no longer cares. She has taken up with other parties but her continuing presence sharpens and prolongs the sadness. He struggles to deal with the end of the affair, holding on to hope without expectation, and the need to accommodate life without love. As indicated in Dominique’s Profile, the title and repeated refrain
“Au revoir, mon amour” (and other phrases in this song) hedge against the terminality of a situation that does not merit even faint hope.

The song has 3 Verses with 8 lines each and 3 identical Choruses with 6 lines each plus an Outro that is basically a re-formulated Chorus. The chords and chord progressions are the same in both Verses and Choruses. Dominique wrote the song in collaboration with his personal and professional partner Laetitia Velma, a pianist and singer-songwriter who wrote the music. The engaging melody seems oddly upbeat for the subject of the song.

The name of the album and one of its songs, Éléor, represents an imaginary geographic destination inspired by the tiny, L-shaped island nation of Elleore in the Roskilde Fjord of Denmark. Elleore temporarily secedes from Denmark for a week every summer. Coincidentally, Éléor also resembles a mashup of the name Laetitia and the name of their son Orson, born in 2015.

Besides the official clip below, the song is also available online as performed at the 1916 Victoires de la Musique (French Grammies) ceremony and in a symphonic version with the Chamber Orchestra of Geneva on the 2024 album “Quelques Lumières.”

Verse 1
Ça fait bientôt une heure
Que tu es arrivée
Que je t'ai vue t'asseoir À côté
Ça fait bientôt une heure
Sans oser te parler
Et soudain il arrive
Et vous vous en allez

Chorus
Au revoir mon amour
Peut-être un autre jour
Peut-être une autre année
Au revoir mon amour
La vie n'est pas finie
La vie n'est pas passée

Verse 2
C'est une autre aujourd'hui
Qui s'avance vers moi
C'est une autre et c'est toi
Qui me passe à côté
C'est un nouveau visage
Dont les yeux sont fermés
Qui ne veut pas me connaître
Ni m'aimer

Chorus
Au revoir mon amour
Peut-être un autre jour
Peut-être une autre année
Au revoir mon amour
La vie n'est pas finie,
La vie n'est pas passée

Instrumental Interlude

Verse 3
Où peux-tu te trouver
Aujourd'hui ou es-tu?
Prête à ne pas me voir
Où es-tu?
Te prépares-tu chez toi
À ne pas me rencontrer
Ou bien à m'ignorer
Où es-tu?

Chorus
À plus tard mon amour
Peut-être un autre jour
Peut-être une autre année
À plus tard mon amour
La vie n′est pas finie,
La vie n'est pas passée

Outro
À plus tard mon amour
Nous avons tout le temps
Je ne suis pas pressé
Peut-être mon amour
Mieux vaut ne pas s'aimer
Qu'un jour ne plus s'aimer

Verse 1
It's been almost an hour
Since you arrived
Since I have seen you sit down Next to me
It's been almost an hour
Without daring to talk to you
And suddenly he comes
And you both walk away

Chorus
Goodbye, my love
Maybe another day
Maybe another year
Goodbye my love
Life isn't over
Life hasn't gone

Verse 2
It’s another person today
Who moves towards me
It's another and it's you
Who walks past me
It's a new face
With closed eyes
Who doesn't want to acknowledge me
Nor love me

Chorus
Goodbye, my love
Maybe another day
Mayber another year
Goodbye, my love
Life isn't over
Life hasn't gone

Instrumental Interlude

Verse 3
Where can you be
Where are you today?
Ready to not see me
Where are you?
Are you getting ready at home
For not meeting me
Or for ignoring me?
Where are you?

Chorus
See you later, my love
Maybe another day
Mayber another year
See you later, my love
Life isn't over
Life hasn't gone

Outro
See you later, my love
We have all the time
I'm not in a hurry
Maybe, my love
It's better not to love
Than to no longer love one day
